For sale is an incredibly rare Stanley Bailey No 4 1/2 H hand plane. The H stands for heavy as this plane has an extra thick casting. The thought is that the extra weight aids in smoothing by keeping the blade chatter free. This was a popular concept in England where infill planes were popular. In fact, this heavy plane was only offered by Stanley to the UK market, which is why they seldom turn up in the US. I believe that this plane is a Type 9 made between 1902 and 1907 making it over 100 years old.

This plane is in remarkable condition for its age. The rosewood tote and knob are crack free and the japanning is about 80% in tact and all original.

The casting itself is in very good shape with no cracks, chips, or breaks. Of course there are signs of use and a wonderful patina indicative of a century of care. This plane would certainly be the centerpiece of a collection. If you dared use it, it could also be the ultimate smoothing plane.
