In terms of its pedigree, design, quality of materials and craftsmanship, condition, size and especially performance, it just has EVERYTHING going for it one could ever hope for and more.
It was made in upstate New York by Foster Bros. Once America's proudest maker of the finest quality cutlery for chefs and butchers, bar none.
It bears the widely known Foster Bros. This unusual designation comes, no doubt, from the fact that its blade incorporates much more than a mere meat cleaver, though no Foster Bros. Cleaver is anything to sneeze at. This rare specimen also includes a gutting hook at the back edge of the blade, as you can see, for opening the abdominal cavity and also to help removing the hide, this would be drawn the length of the carcass in a slaughterhouse. Atop this guthook is also a bone chisel for making cuts that might otherwise damage the cutting edge--no doubt why this one's cutting edge is found so nicely preserved. In the center of the blade is an elliptical hole that might look, at first glance, to be just another place to hang it from a nail but this hole was for pulling inspector tags and other wiry things tendons, nerves, etc.
The main part of the cleaver, though--its blade and handle--are classic Foster Bros. Blade is the finest hand-forged carbon steel, which we've had professionally edged for this sale to be RAZOR keen, enough to thrill even the most jaded user. Handle scales are fine cherrywood that's as warm to the hand as it is easy on the eyes, hatched around the edges for a better grip, and hafted over a full and tapered tang using iron rivets. Design element is the bolster, which is a cupola-shaped iron dome that joins the critical juncture of blade and handle, reinforcing both and keeping food debris out of the handle.
Weighing in at an impressive 2lb. It's all you'll ever need to butcher game, livestock or any other meat that might be delicious enough to cross the road to get to your kitchen or meat locker.
